How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Dental crowns are designed to be strong, but they don't last forever. With some simple care, proper oral hygiene, and regular checkups, a well-made crown can serve you faithfully for fifteen years or more — and many last decades.
A crown is a custom-crafted cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. Because it takes the full force of biting and chewing every day, its lifespan depends on both the material it's made from and how well you look after it.
What affects a crown's lifespan?
Material matters. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns typically last 10–15 years, while modern zirconia and gold crowns frequently exceed 20. At Lumen Dental we select the material based on the tooth's position, your bite, and your aesthetic goals.
Your habits matter even more. Grinding or clenching, chewing ice, and using teeth as tools are the fastest ways to shorten a crown's life. If you grind at night, a custom night guard is an inexpensive insurance policy.
How to make your crown last
Brush twice daily and floss around the crown just as you would a natural tooth — the tooth underneath can still decay at the gumline. Keep up with six-month checkups so we can spot wear or loosening early.
If a crown ever feels loose, sensitive, or rough to your tongue, call us promptly. Early intervention almost always means a simpler, less expensive fix.
